Creating A Craft Corner In A One-Bedroom Apartment

DIY & Organization Creating A Craft Corner In A One-Bedroom Apartment

Recently, my living situation changed abruptly and I found myself in a one-bedroom apartment with less space than I'd become accustomed to. (This doesn't bother me, but I had to get creative to fit in all of my possessions while still creating a livable, comfortable space.) My first priority was setting up all of my embroidery supplies so that I would have an accessible, comfortable, and convenient area to work in, without having to unpack and pack up all of my supplies for each stitching session. There was no obvious place in the apartment to claim for an embroidery studio, so after setting all of my big pieces of furniture in place (bed, couch, standing desk), I looked around for options. My eye kept being drawn back to the corner by the window. It's not a very big space, but I sensed potential.

First, I knew that I wanted a pegboard on the wall so that I could store some of my tools and notions within easy reach, but without using floor or shelf space.

Next, I added this little gray shelf. I picked it up a while ago in a vintage/antiques store and spray painted it charcoal gray. I followed this with a wooden tv tray for my OttLite lamp to sit on, with a little stand so that I can prop open stitch guides and embroidery books for reference as I work.

For even more wall organization I called on this Ikea hanging system. I bought it years ago but hadn't been able to use it, so I was super excited to put it into use now in my craft corner.

And most importantly, trestles! I work on slate frames at least half of the time, and I need a good spot where my trestles can be easily pulled out for use or pushed against the wall to save space. My dad gave me an older chair to use with the trestles (I'm thinking I'll need to design an embroidered slipcover for the poor thing eventually...). It's not pretty, but y'all, it's actually super comfortable for stitching.

This space came together really naturally, one element sort of following the other, and I'm in love with what it's become.
